Sun Gazette - Ferguson Picks Up Challenger

May 24, 2007 - Scott McCaffrey

(Excerpts from story)

County Board Chairman Paul Ferguson's bid for Clerk of the Circuit Court won't go unchallenged in November.

Mark Kelly on May 23 picked up the Arlington County Republican Committee's endorsement for the position, which is being vacated by the retiring David Bell. The clerk's post is the top administrative position for the local court system, which serves Arlington and Falls Church.

“The people of Arlington can rest assured that, as clerk, I will effectively aid in the administration of justice,” Kelly said in a statement. “And, if you buy a home, get married or serve jury duty in Arlington, the Clerk's office will be there to serve you.”

The challenger faces an uphill battle, squaring off against the popular Ferguson in a year when turnout is expected to be light - which, in Arlington, favors Democrats.

But the new Republican nominee said he would make a strong run.

“Arlington voters deserve an alternative to one-party control of each and every constitutional office, and they certainly deserve an alternative to Mr. Ferguson's track record in office,” he said. “I have a vision for improving the service provided by this office to a level that is second to none.”

Like Ferguson, Kelly is an attorney.
